July 1975 200 Years Ago Continental Army Ragged Collection (EDITOR'S NOTE The enlisted men and of America's first Army considered themselves equais, partly because there were few uniforms and was hard to distinguish a private from a general. So George Washington issued color ribbons to the officers). By DANIEL Q. HANEY Associated Press Writer CAMBRIDGE.

Mass. (AP) It was almost a joke, 200 years ago, to call the ragged collection of New England farmers the Continental Army, but it was all George Washington had. On July 3, 1775, the Virginia plantation owner formally took command of 13,743 of these woodsy rebels. Many of them had been camped out on the fringe of Boston for two months. They had come, some supplied for an overnight trip, to fight British soldiers who dared venture into the countryside of Lexington and Concord in search of patriot weapons.

Washington became the new commander-in-chief of the United Colonies, and it was his job to mold a fighting force that could defend the freedoms of English settlers still loyal to their king but upset with the government behind him. With a few aides and a new general, Charles Lee, at his side, Washington rode into Cambridge on July 2 18 days after he was appointed by the Second Coptinental Congress in Philadelphia. The roads were still wet from a recent rain that quiet Sunday. No one was sure when arrive, so there was no welcoming ceremony. Washington entered the little college town to find soldiers idling around Harvard Yard.

It was his first encounter with his new army, 'at earlier that day, in Watertown, members of the Provincial Congress warned him that he would not find "such regularity and discipline" in the troops as he might expect. Their caution was understated. The soldiers were ill-trained and unruly, dirty and sometimes drunk, dressed in tatters and armed with muskets and rifles of every age and description. fought the Redcoats in the Battle of Bunker Hill, most were untested in combat. But balancing these shortcomings, the men were brave and driven by the excitement of the new freedom movement. On that first day, Washington was conducted to the home of the president of Harvard, where he and Lee were assigned all but one of the rooms. From the first, the wealthy, 6- foot-2 aristocrat exhibited the dignity he thought an officer needed to lead. When a surgeon, James Thacher, caught him, he wrote in his journal: "His Excellency was on horseback.

in company with several military gentlemen. It was not difficult to distinguish him from all others. His personal appearance is truly noble and majestic, being tall and wellproportioned. Further away was the village Roxbury and Dorchester Neck. In a wide semicircle outside Boston, the patriots had dug earthen fortifications, but Washington saw that many of them were feeble and poorly placed. Strengthening them became Washington's first major concern so that he could keep the British trapped in Boston while he trained his men. The next morning, July 3, Washington took command from Ward in a brief ceremony, and gave his first order.

It was a request for his colonels to tell him how many men and how much ammunition they had. Then Washington set out on another inspection tour, this time of the troops and fortifications on the southern edge of Slowly, over the next months. Washington pulled his forces into something resembling an army. One of greatest worries was the lack distinction between the soldiers and their officers. Washington had been horrified to learn that many of the officers were elected by their units, and officers and enlisted men thought of themselves as equals.

(AP) Vast pineries brought settlers to northern Wisconsin more than a century ago. Preserving that lumbering era is the Logging Museum at Rhinelander. In operation for more than 40 years, the museum, now in Pioneer Park, is a popular attraction for vacationers and place for area residents to relive their heritage. The visitor can view "Number a steam locomotive built in 1925 for the Thunder Lake Lumber Co.

at Rhinelander and operated until 1941. It was later used at a Mexican mine, then placed in a Colorado museum and returned home in 1973. A steamhauler with tracks and runners, used to pull sleighs of logs during the winter, is on display along with a donkey engine used to pull and lift logs, a road icer, other equipment used to move logs, and a bateau, a large boat that carried men and supplies in the spring river drives. A blacksmith and carpenter shop on the grounds is a tour in itself with displays of items used to build and maintain logging camp equipment. The museum is two connected buildings closely resembling the camps where lumberjacks spent their winters, earning about $24 a month plus room and board.

One can almost smell the salt pork, fresh meat and game, potatoes, beans and sourdough bread served in the cook shack as you walk past the huge cook stove, kitchen utensils and tables set with red and white checked table cloths. Walls are lined with pictures of lumber companies and logging camps. There's a collection of stamping hammers used to make identifying marks on logs. Here too are band saws, circular saws, up and down saws, and one and two-man saws. You'll see a peavey, used to handle logs in the water, and a cant hook, used to roll logs on land, more kinds of axes than you'll remember, and dozens of mystifying items all explained by accompanying cards.

Starting this year, the museum is operated by elder residents of the Rhinelander area. The local chapter of the American Association for Retarded Persons leased the museum from the city this spring. Its members, with those from the local National Retired Teachers Association and Rhinelander Senior Citizens Club, man the tourist attraction on a volunteer basis. L. G.

Sorden, then county agent, is credited with founding the logging museum. The nowretired University of Wisconsin Extension specialist convinced the American Legion that the fading logging era should be preserved and the museum was opened in 1932 on the present St. Regis Paper Co. grounds. When the company needed the land for expansion in the mid 1950s.

the Rhinelander Lions coordinated the drive to finance new quarters at Pioneer Park. The Museum, on U.S. 8 and Wisconsin 47, is free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer months.
