11 a.m. Midnight Johnny Ray Gomez Jr. on Piano 1110 Howard St. BAR Old 344-DRAW Market By Teresa Tull World-Herald Staff Writer It was business as usual Tuesday at American Linen Supply even though an early morning fire caused about $60,000 damage to the plant at 7515 St. Assistant Fire Chief Denver Schmadeke said the fire began in bags of clean laundry and spread to other bags.

Fire officials said the fire might have been caused by spontaneous ignition in the bags because the materials had been saturated with grease and oil. Schmadeke said that the materials might not have been thoroughly cleaned and, in the drying process, a hot spot ignited. Pam Centarri, office manager, said the fire was discovered when the company's chief engineer, Bill Sole, arrived for work. She said no other employees were in the building at the time. There were no injuries.

She said although the loss was significant, it was mostly a result of water and smoke damage. The only equipment lost was a belt in the machinery that folds linens after cleaning. That is where the fire began. "The sprinkler system was a godsend," she said. Schmadeke said the sprinkler system kept the fire in check until firefighters were able to extinguish it.

The fire was reported at 12:11 a.m. and was declared under control at 12:47 a.m. Mrs. Centarri said deliveries should not be significantly interrupted to the various restaurants, print shops, service stations and hotels that the company serves between Omaha and St. Joseph, Mo.

"Twelve routes went out today, and about five to six routes will go out about one day late," she said. Crews will work around the clock until things are back in order, she said.
