I’ve found the tactic in police work that usually works for winning over “cop haters” and that’s the ride-a-long. You’ll get two typical reactions. The person will either agree and have a true epiphany or they will reject the offer and continue on the path of ignorance. With the podcast, Trolls have bombed me repeatedly and I usually just reverse trolled with memes. However, I decided recently to offer them a chance to be a guest on the podcast to discuss their issues with lawenforcement…so far out of my 10 or so offers, no troll has taken the offer. Here is my latest example. #police #trolls #lawenforcement #podcast

Winning is not always a good thing, and when it comes to creating #harmful #addictive engagement with #gambling it can be a really bad thing. Many #disordered gamblers started down that path to harmful addiction by winning their first ever bet or gamble. First impressions are a powerful thing, and that feeling of excitement and joy will always be the benchmark for your brain when it thinks of gambling. It means that even when you fail to repeat that feeling, or emulate that success, part of your brain will hang on to that first impression of gambling being a source of joyful excitement and will keep pushing it as something to do in times of stress or unhappiness. Something which will "pick you up".At the risk of trivialising #gamblingaddiction I would suggest to anyone who hasn't developed a harmful connection with gambling to liken it a bit to the first time you had that "favourite" meal from the local takeaway. That time which cemented it in your mind as being a "favourite meal". How many times have you gone back there and ordered the same thing again despite knowing that the last two, three, or more times that you have had that meal it wasn't nearly as good as the first time, or as you remember the first time being. And for people like Tracey winning BIG can be REALLY BAD.Part of the driver for addictive gambling is your brain telling you that you have financial needs, that winning a bit of money would be so helpful to you. This creates a "reason" to go gambling with whatever small amount of money you have available. But what happens if you do win big is that this "argument" becomes undermined. The financial need is no longer a reason to gamble. So, the part of your brain which wants to keep gambling, to keep hitting that dopamine rush, temps you into gambling more. More frequently and with ever bigger stakes.Yes, it will tell you that you have won big once so can do it again but what it is really trying to do is help you get rid of your newly acquired financial security as quickly as possible so that once again it can use the "financial need" argument to get you to gamble when there otherwise would be no incentive to do so.As Tracey says, it stops being about winning or losing and becomes about the process of gambling. If you have won £1.6million then you do not NEED to gamble for financial reasons, but no matter how much money you have the addictive NEED to gamble will try to prevail.Which is why a really big win can so often destroy someone's life, and send them on a nose spin from a very high towards a very big crash - and one which often doesn't stop at ground zero but takes them deeper into debt and criminal actions.A prosecutor would look at Tracey's story and call it greed. But we know it is simply addiction. The #criminaljustice system needs to learn the difference otherwise many more Tracey's will pointlessly end up being punished for being addicted.Gambling addiction IS an addiction.
